Hobo Spiders

Nuisance

What it is

Funnel-web spiders that build sheet-like webs with a retreat, often near ground level. They are generally shy and bites are uncommon; modern evidence does not support many older claims of severe necrotic injury.

How to recognize it

Brown spiders with a funnel-shaped web, a patterned abdomen, and fast running.

Where you will find it

Ground level: basements, window wells, woodpiles, and gardens.

Why it matters

They are often blamed for bites, but bites are uncommon and older claims of serious injury are not well supported. Many brown spiders are misidentified.

What to do

  1. Do not handle spiders or reach into stored items with bare hands. Wear gloves when moving boxes, wood, or equipment in garages and sheds.
  2. Reduce clutter and vacuum webs and egg sacs from corners and storage areas.
  3. Note where you see them and take a photo if you can do so safely.
  4. Contact a licensed pest professional if you are unsure what kind it is or you see many.
