Field Ants

Nuisance

What it is

Medium-to-large outdoor ants that usually nest in soil, lawns, fields, or beneath objects. Some species build noticeable mounds and may enter structures while foraging for sweets or insects.

How to recognize it

Dirt mounds or craters in lawns, along walkways, and beside foundations, with ants coming and going.

Where you will find it

Open lawns, fields, and under stones or boards.

Why it matters

They rarely invade in large numbers, but mounds right against the foundation are worth having checked.

What to do

  1. Wipe up spills, crumbs, and grease, and keep food, including pet food, in sealed containers.
  2. Keep trash covered and taken out regularly.
  3. Note where you see them and take a photo so a technician can trace the trail or nest.
  4. Contact a licensed pest professional before trying sprays or baits. Store-bought products can split colonies and make the problem worse.
