Pharaoh Ants

Nuisance

What it is

Very small yellowish ants that form large, multi-queen colonies and readily nest inside heated buildings. Improper disturbance can cause colonies to split or 'bud,' spreading the infestation.

How to recognize it

Tiny yellowish ants with a darker rear that form many trails and can appear in several rooms at once.

Where you will find it

Warm, heated buildings: wall voids, behind baseboards, kitchens, bathrooms, and apartment buildings.

Why it matters

Colonies with many queens split when disturbed, which spreads the problem. They are a particular concern in hospitals and care facilities.

What to do

  1. Wipe up spills, crumbs, and grease, and keep food, including pet food, in sealed containers.
  2. Keep trash covered and taken out regularly.
  3. Note where you see them and take a photo so a technician can trace the trail or nest.
  4. Contact a licensed pest professional before trying sprays or baits. Store-bought products can split colonies and make the problem worse.
