Almond Moths

Nuisance

What it is

A stored-product moth (often called the tropical warehouse moth) whose larvae infest nuts, grains, dried fruit, seeds, chocolate, and other stored foods. Larvae produce webbing in infested products.

How to recognize it

Small gray moths and silken webbing in nuts, grains, dried fruit, or chocolate.

Where you will find it

Pantries, nut and dried-fruit storage, and warehouses.

Why it matters

Larvae contaminate food with webbing and droppings. Any infested package should be discarded.

What to do

  1. Check dry goods such as flour, cereal, rice, nuts, pet food, and spices, and throw out anything infested.
  2. Move remaining food into airtight containers and vacuum shelves and crevices where crumbs collect.
  3. Look for the original source, such as an old open package at the back of the pantry.
  4. Contact a licensed pest professional if the problem returns or you cannot find the source.
