Flour Beetles

Nuisance

What it is

Stored-product beetles that infest flour, cereal, meal, spices, and other processed grain products. They generally feed on broken or milled material rather than intact kernels.

How to recognize it

Small reddish-brown beetles crawling in flour, cereal, and baking supplies.

Where you will find it

Pantries, bulk-food areas, and flour or grain storage.

Why it matters

They infest milled grain products, and a heavy infestation leaves a musty odor.

What to do

  1. Check dry goods such as flour, cereal, rice, nuts, pet food, and spices, and throw out anything infested.
  2. Move remaining food into airtight containers and vacuum shelves and crevices where crumbs collect.
  3. Look for the original source, such as an old open package at the back of the pantry.
  4. Contact a licensed pest professional if the problem returns or you cannot find the source.
