Nuisance

What it is

Small reddish-brown stored-product beetles whose larvae feed on tobacco, spices, pet food, dried plant material, grains, and many packaged foods. Adults are strong fliers and may be seen near windows or lights.

How to recognize it

Tiny reddish-brown beetles that fly to windows and lights, and small round exit holes in packaging.

Where you will find it

Pantries, spices, pet food, and stored plant products.

Why it matters

They infest a wide range of dry goods, and the source can be an old forgotten package.

What to do

  1. Check dry goods such as flour, cereal, rice, nuts, pet food, and spices, and throw out anything infested.
  2. Move remaining food into airtight containers and vacuum shelves and crevices where crumbs collect.
  3. Look for the original source, such as an old open package at the back of the pantry.
  4. Contact a licensed pest professional if the problem returns or you cannot find the source.
