Granary Weevils

Nuisance

What it is

A stored-grain weevil whose larvae develop inside whole kernels of wheat, corn, rice, and other grains. Adults cannot fly and may be found in bulk grain or infested pantry products.

How to recognize it

Dark brown beetles with a long snout that cannot fly, and hollowed-out grain kernels.

Where you will find it

Bulk grain, pantries, and stored wheat, corn, or rice.

Why it matters

Larvae grow inside whole kernels, so infestations can go unseen until adults appear.

What to do

  1. Check dry goods such as flour, cereal, rice, nuts, pet food, and spices, and throw out anything infested.
  2. Move remaining food into airtight containers and vacuum shelves and crevices where crumbs collect.
  3. Look for the original source, such as an old open package at the back of the pantry.
  4. Contact a licensed pest professional if the problem returns or you cannot find the source.
